Nucleus [STUDIO POLYLESTER_Tai KWUN_HONG KONG_2018]

Nucleus: a steel structure clad with coloured transparent curtains as a viewing platform in the main gallery space in the newly renovated Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts in Hong Kong. The design consists of an upper platform with coloured PVC curtains below, creating a colourful yet confined space which visitors must navigate through to reach the central nucleus, inspired by the Victoria Prison. The structure plays with the architectural logic of penitentaries and survelliance. The ‘prison cell’ below forms the centre stage of action within the structure, whilst being isolated and marginal. The project was worked on with Gabriel Lester for multidisciplinary design studio PolyLester in Amsterdam.
